Stedelijk Museum will move back to the Museumplein in 2008 when the 'old' building has been renovated and the expansion is completed.

About the museum
The addition of the CS to the Stedelijk's name refers not only to the location close to Amsterdam's Central Station, but also the fact that the Museum shares the building with other users: Stedelijk Museum cum suis. Among the fellow tenants are the design centre Post Amsterdam and Restaurant Club 11 (Elf) on the top-(eleventh)floor. Stedelijk Museum CS is accommodated on the second and third stories of the striking high-rise on the Oosterdokskade (former building of The Post Group). There it has at its disposal 6000 m² including an entry hall, museum shop, coffee corner and educational space, and space for technical support and storage. There is direct access from the Museum to the restaurant and auditorium on the 11th storey - the top floor. The programming will be put together in onsultation with the users. On weekends Elf will be transformed into a nightly dance venue. The old Stedelijk on the Museumplein has been closed since January 1, 2004. According to plans, the doors will open there again in 2008. The offices and depots, and the Museum?s library, open to the public, will for the time being continue to be located at Deccaweg 26, near Sloterdijk Station.

Collection
Stedelijk Museum has a very broad Internationally renowed collection of modern art and design. In addition, the museum offers a wide variety of temporary exhibitions on a large number of subjects from the history of 19th-century art.

Admission
9,-
13-17 years 2,50
till 12 years free.

Hours
Open: Daily 10.00 - 18.00 hours
Friday 10.00 - 21.00 hours.

Allard Pierson Museum
Archaeological museum of the Universiteit van Amsterdam

About the museum
Allard Pierson Museum is the archaeological museum of the University of Amsterdam. The ancient civilisations of ancient Egypt, the Near East, the Greek World, Etruria and the Roman Empire are revived in this museum. Art-objects and utensils, dating from 4000 B.C. till 500 A.D. give a good impression of everyday-life, mythology and religion in Antiquity. There are also several scale models of ancient temples and buildings. In the ancient Egypt department there is a room dedicated to death with mummies, sarcophagi and a film showing the process of mummification. Our so-called plaster-cast-attic, only to be visited with a guided tour, shows copies of world-famous Roman and Greek statues. Every year two or three temporary exhibitions are organised. Check our website for more information.

Collection
General information on several departments of the museum:
Egypt, gift of the Nile
The civilization of the Nile is revived in Amsterdam. Mummies and sarcophagi, images of gods and Egyptians, and objects of life and death all demand attention in the Egyptian rooms. One of the rooms is dedicated to death and death rituals. A DVD shows the practice and rituals of mummification. Scale models of the pyramids of Giza and the temple of Edfu, along with a computer which prints the visitor?s name in hieroglyphics, are among the attractions which unlock the secrets of a land where Egyptian pharaohs, Greek kings and Roman emperors ruled from 5000 B.C. to 700 A.D. Early Christianity has left its traces in Coptic art.

Near East Cyprus and early Greece
Jewellery, weapons, statuettes, vases and cuneiform tablets offer a glimpse of religious and daily life in Iran, Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine and Anatolia between 5000 B.C. and 800 A.D. Pottery and marble idols take us back to the early civilisations of the Cycladic Islands, Crete and Greek mainland. And in Cyprus, East and West meet, forming a distinct culture.

Greek Word, Etruria, Roman Empire
Greek civilisation began to emerge in 1000 B.C. Greek colonists brought their culture to Italy, features of which were adopted by the Etruscans in the north and then by the Romans. Graeco-Roman civilisation spread throughout the Roman Empire and greatly influenced the later art and thinking of Europe. Statues and portraits in stone, small bronzes, glass, pottery, jewellery and household ware, decorated with scenes of everyday life and mythology, give an impression of life in the ancient world.

Admission
Adults 5,-
children 4 - 16 years/seniors (over 65)/CJP/students/Stadspas 2,50
children under 4 free
groups of 10 or more 3,50
students and staff of UvA / HvA free
schoolchildren in groups (provided prior notification is given) 1,-
MK (Museumkaart)/Rembrandt Association/members of VVAPM/ICOM/IAmsterdam Card free.

Hours
Tue - Fri 10 a.m. - 5 p.m
Sat, Sun 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Closed on Monday, the first of January, Easter Sunday, 30th of April (Queen's Day), Whit Sunday, Christmas Day.

Transportation
(tram) 4, 9, 16, 24, 25

Facilities for the disabled
The museum is accessible for wheelchair users and there is a disabled parking place right beside the entrance. The beautiful light through the high windows, the medieval church furnishing, gravestones (such as Saskia van Uylenburgh’s, Rembrandts first wife) and the magnificent painted wooden vaults, create a unique atmosphere and give away something of the buildings' unique history. The Old Church has been built in different phases and ages and has a total area of 4000 m2. There are two organs: a transept organ (1658) and the well-known Vater-Müller organ (1724/1738), nowadays both used for concerts. Matteo Imbruno is the organist of The Old Church. In the Summer the Walking concerts take place. One concert in three historic buildings in the Amsterdam city heart. Like in 2000 the Museum Amstelkring, the Palace of the Queen on Dam square and the Old Church. Besides cultural events, exhibitions and concerts dinner parties, receptions, presentations and meetings, the monument is open to visitors.

Hours
Open: Monday - Saturday: 11.00 - 17.00 hours
Sunday: 13.00 - 17.00 hours
Close: 1 January, 25 December, 30 april

Facilities for the disabled
Yes

Additional information
Starts at : 20:15 uur

Today, the Royal Palace is used for official occasions by her Majesty the Queen. It is also often open to the public.

About the museum
The Royal Palace of Amsterdam was built in the 17th century as the new city hall. After the signing of the peace treaty of Munster in 1648 the city council of Amsterdam chose Jacob van Campen's design for a large and impressive new building. The power and wealth of Amsterdam are reflected in the building and its interior design: sculptures by Artus Quellinus and paintings by Govaert Flinck, Ferdinand Bol and other great painters of that day, show historical, biblical en mythological stories which symbolically refer to the city of Amsterdam and its city council. When King Louis Napoleon came to Amsterdam in 1808 he had the city hall turned into a Palace. The large collections of Empire style furniture, chandeliers and clocks date from this period. Nowadays, the Royal Palace is used for official occasions by her Majesty the Queen. It is also often open to the public. Every year during the summer season, an exhibition is organised based on a theme related to the history of the building. Next to this an annual event at the Palace is the presentation of the Royal Grant for Paintings by her Majesty the Queen and the following exhibition.

Collection
The Palace contains one of the most complete collections of Empire style furniture dating from the Napoleontic era. The splendid paintings by Ferdinand Bol, Jacob Jordaens and Govert Flinck and fine sculpted work by Artus Quellinus refer to the governmental and administrative functions that the building once had.

Admission
4,50

Hours
Open: 15 Dec - 1 Jan (not with Christmas), 20 Jan. - 1 Feb (not on Mo. and Fri.)
12:30 - 17:00 hours (provisional). Its central themes are the eventful history of the Jews in the Netherlands and their colourful culture.

Collection
The Jewish Historical Museum opened in 1932 at the Weigh House in Nieuwmarkt. In 1987 the museum moved to the synagogue complex on Nieuwe Amstelstraat, near Waterlooplein. This comprises two large and two smaller synagogues with an annex. The Great Synagogue is the oldest building, dating from 1671. In 1685 the Obbene Shul was added. The third synagogue (Dritt Shul) opened around 1700 and finally, in 1752, the New Synagogue was built. In 2007 the museum expanded the complex by building a basement under the New Synagogue, housing a Print Room and an Auditorium. Permanent Displays 'Religion' is the title of the Great Synagogue presentation on Jewish customs for the Sabbath and festivals as well as key events in Jewish life, such as birth, coming of age, marriage and mourning. Beautiful ceremonial objects are displayed where they would have stood when this was a functioning synagogue. In short film clips Dutch Jews tell about their own religious experiences. In the presentation on the history of the Jews in the Netherlands from 1600 to 1900 on the Great Synagogue gallery the stories behind the objects, paintings and documents provide a poignant comparison to today?s situation. Beginning in the late 16th century, persecution and pogroms in other parts of Europe led to the arrival of Sephardi (Spanish and Portuguese) and Ashkenazi (Central and Eastern European) Jews. How these culturally disparate groups of Jews integrated and emancipated in the Netherlands is a central theme of the display. On the gallery of the New Synagogue the 'History of the Jews in the Netherlands 1900-The Present Day' is brought to life in a display of objects and historical film clips. The main developments are described based around fifteen themes in three periods: prewar Holland, the Second World War and the postwar years up to today. Personal stories of Jews are presented in combination with distinctive historical objects. The Hollanders live in the new Jewish Historical Museum Children?s Museum. Everyone is welcome to visit and find out what Jewish tradition is all about. Max the Matzo lives in the new house too, and he is always glad to show you around. Discover how to plait your own bread in the kitchen, make music in the music room, dream away in the bedroom and learn to see things from a different angle in the study. Come see, enjoy, ask and learn. With the family, school, friends, for a birthday party, or just to visit on your own. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, make yourself at home in our new house! People enjoy the 19th-century atmosphere of the gardens: the winding paths, majestic trees, the fascinating sculptures and the monumental historical buildings. Artis is a haven of peace and quiet right in the city centre of Amsterdam. Artis is a fascinating zoo. In an area of 14 hectares around 700 species of animals provide a magnificent overview of the entire animal kingdom. Amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, mammals and insects... all are superbly represented. Artis's renowned Aquarium brings you face to face with ? the secret life of Amsterdam's canals! Around the zoo you'll find many more Dutch and European animal and plant species, as well as more exotic ones. You can also come to quench your thirst for knowledge at the Planetarium, the museums and all kinds of smaller exhibitions.

Collection
The five elements that make up present day Artis are each represented in the logo: Artis as a Zoo and Aquarium, Botanical gardens, Zoological Museum, Geological Museum and Planetarium. This unique combination meets Artis's primary objective: offering educational material to broad segments of the population. Material that deals with our planet Earth as a unique place in the universe, worthy of the greatest care and respect. Artis, the Royal Zoological Society 'Natura Artis Magistra', was founded on 1 May 1838, at the initiative of the book dealer G.F.Westerman. Its purpose was: 'to promote the knowledge of Natural History, in a clear and agreeable way; both by assembling an extensive collection of living animals and by displaying mounted exhibits from the animal kingdom.' In the first half of the 19th century, the combination of a zoo, scientific collections, a Zoological Laboratory and Museum as well as the academically exceptional Artis Library, was quite unique. Since 1988 visitors to Artis have free access to the Zoological Museum's exhibition halls. The addition of the Planetarium (1988) and the Geological Museum (1992) completes Artis's story on life. The presentations in the Planetarium take audiences on a fascinating trip through time, right back to the birth of the universe itself. The Geological Museum shows how the Earth has developed and provides insights into the ancient ancestors of present day life forms.

Admission
adults 16 euro
senior (65+) 15 euro
children (3-9 years) 12.50 euro.

Reductions
During September, on Ascension-day, daily after 15.30 hrs, 65+, youth, groups more than 20 persons

Opening Hours
Open: Daily: 9.00 - 17.00 hours
April - October: 9.00 - 18.00 hours
Close: open every day of the year

Transportation
(tram) 6-9-14-20 halte Plantage Kerklaan
(bus) 56
(metro) stop Waterlooplein
(train) Amsterdam CS, 20 minutes walk or tram 9 and 20
(museumboat) stop 5 and 6 or from Central Station the Artis Expres, Lovers
(parking) own parking place (first 6 hours ? 6 and after that ? 2.50 p/h)

Facilities for the disabled
ITS Internationaal Toegankelijkheids SymboolBereikbaarheid - goed.
Hollandsche Schouwburg

Hollandsche Schouwburg
The Hollandsche Schouwburg was initially a theatre; today it is a war memorial, with an exhibition mounted inside the building. It commemorates the many thousand Jews who during World War II were deported from this place and sent to be killed.

About the museum
Theatre
The Hollandsche Schouwburg was built in 1892 in Amsterdam?s Plantage district. It was a popular theatre, putting on many well-known Dutch plays. A large number of Jews lived in the Plantage district and not surprisingly the theatre had a sizable Jewish public. In 1941 the Nazi occupiers changed the theatre?s name into Joodsche Schouwburg, or, Jewish Theatre. After that, only Jewish actors and artistes were allowed to perform there ? for a strictly Jewish audience.
Deportation centre
Between August 1942 and November 1943 the Hollandsche Schouwburg was used by the Nazis as a deportation centre. Jews from Amsterdam and surrounding districts were obliged to report there before being deported. Most of them were brought to the theatre by force. Hours, days, sometimes weeks they waited, prisoners cut off from the outside world. Then they were transported to the Dutch transit camps in Westerbork or Vught. These were the last stop before they were herded into trains bound for one of the extermination camps.

Monument
After World War II had ended it was to be many years before the building ? which grew ever more dilapidated ? was allocated a suitable purpose. It was not until 1962 that the city council of Amsterdam placed a monument here in remembrance of the Jewish victims of the Nazi terror and those years of unspeakable suffering. Long neglect had made it impossible to restore the original theatre building. So the auditorium and platform were pulled down. What emerged was an almost empty space and here an obelisk was erected, whose base was a Star of David. The walls around the former stage wings remained partially standing, enclosing the obelisk. Beside the entrance on the left, a memorial chapel was installed, with an eternal flame in the centre of the floor. On the wall are listed the 6,700 family names of the 104,000 Jews from the Netherlands who were murdered in the war. In 1992 the Jewish Historical Museum and the Hollandsche Schouwburg came under the same management.

Collection
Since 1993 the first floor has housed an exhibition. This recounts the story of the persecution of Jews in the Netherlands, using photographs, documents and video film. There are sections on the Dutch Resistance, and on the operations to rescue Jewish children. The exhibition forms part of educational projects. There are programmes for school groups of all stages and ages. As well as the permanent exhibition, the Hollandsche Schouwburg regularly organizes presentations dealing with the persecution of Jews.

Admission
free entrance

Opening Hours
Daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed on Jewish New Year?s Day and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

Transportation
Metro 51, 53 and 54, Waterlooplein stop.
Biblical Museum

About the museum
The Museum dates back to 1851, when rev. Leendert Schouten put his now world famous model of the Tabernacle ? the ancient Israelite?s portable sanctuary ? on public display. This formed the beginning of a rich and varied collection that still constitutes the heart of the museum. Displays centred on a model of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem explain the significance of this sacred place in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Clay tablets, fragments of papyrus and archaeological remains tell the fascinating story of how the Bible came into existence and the influence it has had on Dutch society through the ages. About a thousand bibles are on display, including unique and rare examples. Through touch-screens one can discover all about the States Translation of 1637 and two wonderful illustrated bibles from the 17th century. The collection of Egyptian antiquities is small, but of outstanding quality. In the Aroma cabinets visitors can discover and smell biblical aromas from alabaster jars. Besides the museum's permanent display, temporary exhibitions are also held. The unique collection in a historical setting makes the Bijbels Museum well worth visiting.

Collection
Archaeological discoveries, artefacts from ancient Egypt, centuries-old models of the temple of Solomon and Herod, religious objects from the Judeo-Christian tradition and even aromas bring Bible stories to life for visitors to the Biblical Museum. It houses a famous 19th-century model of the Tabernacle: a wonderful reconstruction of the sacred shrine housing the Ark of the Covenant, which the Israelites carried with them during their exile in the desert under the leadership of Moses. Displays centred on a model of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem explain the significance of this sacred place in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Clay tablets, fragments of papyrus and archaeological remains tell the fascinating story of how the Bible came into existence, and the influence it has had on Dutch society through the ages. The Biblical Museum is housed in two historic buildings on the Herengracht canal in Amsterdam. The renowned architect Philips Vingboons built the houses for Amsterdam merchant Jacob Cromhout in 1662. This remarkable and atmospheric setting provides a home for the unique collection of one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands.

Admission
6,-
children 13-17 years 3,-
Museumboat 3,50
MK and children till 12 years free

Hours
Open: Monday - Saturday: 10.00 - 17.00 hours
Sunday and public holidays: 11.00 - 17.00 hours
Close: 1 January, 30 April

Transportation
(tram) 1-2-5
(museumboat) stop 4

Facilities for the disabled
Yes

Additional information
Guided tours on appointment (horeca) coffee and tea

Exhibitions
Giotto in Amsterdam

About the museum
Huis Marseille, museum for photography, organises exhibitions for photography with both contemporary and historical works. Huis Marseille is located in a seventeenthcentury canal house in Amsterdam.
With the opening of its doors in September 1999, Huis Marseille became the first platform in Amsterdam to present photographic exhibitions on a permanent basis. The medium's rich history and huge variety of applications make it possible for Huis Marseille to offer a broad range of subjects to the photography-minded public. Its selection criteria are the quality of the image and the expressiveness of the work. By taking advantage of the tiered, intimate structure of the house, it is possible to combine different exhibitions and accentuate their thematic interconnectivity. Huis Marseille regularly collaborates with pre-eminent institutions in the Netherlands and abroad to organise co-productions and travelling exhibitions.

Collection
Huis Marseille additionally has its own collection of photography. This collection, which is international in character, currently places its accent on contemporary work by photographers that primarily work as visual artists. Consequently, many of the photos exhibit a certain monumental quality. They present a broad interpretation of the medium through a highly varied use of photographic techniques. Photos from this collection are regularly shown in Huis Marseille in differing combinations. The light-sensitive nature of photography, however, makes it impossible to keep the collection permanently on display.

Admission
5 euro adults / 3 euro (CJP, Stadspas, Rembrandt Pass, students, groups) / free (Museumkaart, ICOM Pass, Amsterdam Pass, children up to 17 years old

Hours
Tuesday - Sunday, 11 am - 6 pm. For more than two years, Anne Frank lived secretively with the other people in hiding in the back part of her father's office building at # 263 Prinsengracht. The Secret Annex has been preserved in its authentic state. The front part of the building - the offices where the Helpers worked - has been restored to the style and ambiance of the war years. Quotations from the diary, photographs, films and original objects - belonging to the people in hiding and those who helped them - all serve to illustrate the events that occurred at this location. Anne's orignal diary is on display in the museum along with some of her other notebooks. The museum's interactive 'Free2choose' exhibition explores the present-day boundaries of freedom.

Admission
7,50
children 10-17 years old 3,50
children under 10 free admission.
